Kamishibai/かみしばい/Storyboards

Using picture books for storytelling is common in all languages, and is a great way to introduce new language in the language classroom. The pictures immediately convey a sense of context that students will quickly understand!
Here are some Storyboards or kamishibai that I have made for using in class. Download them, print them out, put the words back-to-back with the pictures, and then laminate them together.
BE CAREFUL! You must put the words for the title page on the back of the last page, words for page 1 on the back of the title page, and so on!

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
ALT/HRT: Janken and do the conversation first together, then with a few students to practice/demonstrate.
Students: Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4

ALT- Read the storyboards to the students.
Students- Listen and interact with the ALT.

Textbook- page 27. Use the nine pictures for vocabulary.
ALT- First, ask the students if they know the vocabulary for the pictures on page 27.  Then, introduce the chant and lead singing. Roll one dice to choose Yes (1,3,5) or No (2,4,6).
Students- Tell the vocabulary you know. Sing together.
HRT- Suggest ideas for vocabulary on page 27 to students in Japanese.

Activity 2- Interview- 10 minutes
Textbook- page 27
Blackboard-
  • W) Can you play the piano?
  • L) (No, I can’t.) Yes, I can. My name is Ken.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate the activity- Play Janken, Winner asks, “Can you OO?” until the other student says “Yes, I can. My name is XX.” Winner then writes the other student’s name into his/her book under the picture.
Students- Watch & listen to the demonstation, then tell the meaning in Japanese. All standing with textbooks, make pairs, play Janken, & do the conversation.  When all pictures have a name, write your name on the blackboard and sit down.

Activity- Find 3 People- 10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W) I can play tennis. Can you play tennis? 
  • L1) Yes, I can. I can play tennis.
  • L2) No, I can’t. I can’t play tennis.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate activity- Pairs Janken, Winner asks “Can you OO?” and Loser answers.  GOAL is to find 3 people with YES (or NO) answers. Students then return to their seats and sit down.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?
-What was fun or interesting?
-What was difficult?
-How can we make that easier next time?

Let’s Listen-1- 5 minutes
CD-tracks 20- 23.
Text- page 24. (hippo(example)- can swim/can’t fly; (2)bird- like singing. can fly/can’t swim; (3)fish-in the sea. can swim/can fly; (4)penguin- black & white, can swim/can’t fly.)
ALT- Check that the students know the animal names in English before playing the CD- hippo-kaba; bird-tori; fish-sakana; penquin-pengin. After the CD finishes, check the students’ answers.
Students- Listen to the CD and write numbers 2-4 under the animals.

Let’s Listen-2- 6 minutes
CD- track 24-25. Boy- CAN play soccer, play the piano, make rice balls and miso soup; CAN’T play table tennis, play the guitar. Girl- CAN play table tennis, play the guitar, make rice balls and miso soup; CAN’T play soccer, play the piano.
Blackboard-
  • Can you play soccer? 
  • Yes, I can. I can play soccer.
  • No, I can’t. I can’t play soccer.
Students- Listen to the CD and draw a circle around the things the boy & a girl CAN do.
ALT/HRT- Play the CD once, check answers, then play the second track.

Chant- I Can Swim- 5 minutes

ALT- Introduce chant and lead singing. After first round, write students’ ideas for new vocabulary on the blackboard.
Students- Sing together. After the first round, suggest new words/phrases to substitute for swim & fly.
HRT- Suggest ideas for new words/phrases to students in Japanese.

O/X Game- 10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • I can play soccer. 
  • I can play soccer, too. 
  • I can’t play soccer.
Materials: Australia Points Map for each student.
ALT & HRT: Take turns making a statement about students.
Students:
  1. Choose a student using 2 dice.
  2. Repeat after teachers (I can play soccer.);
  3. Students raise hands to vote if they think the chosen student’s answer is Yes/O, or don’t raise hands if they think the chosen
  4. Repeat question AGAIN after teacher.
  5. Chosen student asnwers.
  6. Students mark 2 points on Points Map if they guessed correctly. Chosen student also marks 2 points.
Find 3 People- 5 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W) I can OO.  
  • L1) I can OO, too! 
  • L2) I can’t OO.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate and explain activity: With all students standing, students make pairs. Janken winner asks an original sentence- the GOAL is to make a sentence that will get a positive answer. After getting 3 ‘I can OO, too!’ answers from 3 different students, a student wins and can sit down.
Students- Watch & listen to teachers demonstrate and explain the activity. Then, with all students standing, pair with a partner and play Janken. Winner asks a question, Loser answers. Students getting 3 YES answers from 3 different students win! and sit down.
