Hello, Hi, Hey, Howdy, G’day, Good Morning, Hola, Aloha, Bon Jour, Bon Dia, Bon Journo, Ni Hao, Konnichiwa, Anyohaseyo, Sambaino, Kiola, Selamat Pagi (am) (pm-Siang), Shalom, Jambo, Asalamalekum, Zzdrastvet-yah, Namaste.

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
ALT/HRT: Janken and do the conversation first together, then with the whole class to practice/demonstrate.
Students: Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4
Blackboard

  • W) 1,3,5...19.
  • L) 2,4,6...20.

Activity- Muck Chee Baa- Indonesian Janken, All Students vs. ALT- 5 minutes
ALT: Lead all students to play Janken, Indonesian style (Muck-Chee-Baa!)
Students: Play Janken with ALT. Losers must sit down. Students get 1 point for each round they remain standing.

Chant- How Many Cats?- 5 minutes
Blackboard-
  • How many clap2 2X
  • How many CATS? clap3
  • 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10
  • (11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-20)
  • cats-rabbits-dogs-pigs-cows
ALT- Introduce the chant, check meaning in Japanese, Listen and Repeat the words, then lead chanting. For answers, count out numbers on 10 fingers, starting with different numbers each time.
HRT/Students- Listen and sing along.

Interview Bingo- How many cats?- 15 minutes
Materials- Interview Bingo print for each student.
Blackboard:
  • W) How many cats?
  • L) 3.
ALT: Read question with 5 different animals from Bingo print for students to Repeat. Then reading each question one at a time again, say each answer for that animal for students to repeat. Demonstrate/explain how to play.
Students: Repeat Q & A patterns after ALT. Circle one number on each horizontal line. Listen to ALT’s explanation. Ask questions to HRT.
HRT: Answer students’ questions in Japanese.
To Play: All students stand, and make pairs. Pairs Janken. Winner asks the question, Loser answers and Winner marks an X on that number. Students with 5 X’s in a row make Bingo!, and write their names on the blackboard.
ALT/HRT: Congratulate winners and award 1 point for each X on students’ prints (to color in on Australia Points Map).

Activity
- Get The Picture (GTP)- 10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W) How many cats?
  • L1) 3. (1 CAT card)
  • L2) No cats. How many dogs?
  • W1) 2. (1 DOG card)
  • W2) No dogs. Bye!
  • -cats   dogs   pigs   cows   rabbits-
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate activity- then ask students to explain in Japanese (to check their comprehension).
Students-Pairs Janken, Winner asks a question. If the other student has any of that card, he/she gives ONE card. If the Janken Loser doesn’t have the card, he/she can try to get a card.  Students form new pairs and continue.

Row Races- if time
Materials- Students’ animal cards gathered in last activity.
Blackboard-
  • W) How many cats?
  • L1) 3.
  • L2) No cats!
Students- Janken with seat parnter, do dialog. Students on one side move one seat back and play Janken again.  Continue until students return to own seat and sit down.
ALT/HRT-Introduce and demonstrate activity.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?
-What was fun or interesting?
-What was difficult?
-How can we make that easier next time?

Closing- 1 minute
Students: ‘Thank you! Good bye!’

  • A) Do you like (point with finger to picture on page 25)?
  • B1) Yes, I do. I like apples.

Students- Tear papers into 5 pieces, then cover 5 pictures on page 25. When a teacher answers, take the paper off the picture if yours is covered. Students to uncover all of their pictures stand up and yell, ‘I win!’.

ALT/HRT- Introduce the activity. If the CD is too fast, Question & Answer together using the Q&A on the blackboard. Check the students’ answer at the end.
Students- Listen to the CD; write O in the space if the person likes dogs, apples or soccer, or X if the person doesn’t like it. Check answers.

ALT- Introduce, Read & Repeat from the blackboard. Lead chant. For each round, roll a dice to choose Yes (even) or No (odd).
Students- Listen & Repeat, then sing and clap along.

Activity 1- Interview- 15 minutes

*And a box with 3 areas, a picture, O and X, like those on page 28 (for demonstration).
Students- First draw 1 picture of THINGS YOU LIKE in each of the three
spaces on page 28. Then, after watching the demonstration, Janken with your friends; winner can ask one question, then loser. Write your friends’ names in the O or X space next to your pictures. When the names’ spaces are full, sit down.
NOTE: If students are sloooowww to decide what to draw, limit choices to 1) sports; 2) food; 3) animals/pet; 4) colors.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate activity. Ask students to explain the activity in Japanese to check comprehension.

Alternate Activity- Find 3 People- if not enough time

Cut papers for Ohajiki Game
You don't have to call out just one word when playing the Ohajiki Game. Here is a dialog we used for Grade 5 Lesson 4 'Do you like OO?' When we asked the question we pointed to the picture in the textbook. Students keyed on the last word in the answer pattern, but were able to hear the target pattern more than a dozen times during the game.

ALT- Listen & Repeat the kids’ names and the words/pictures on page 24. Check the students’ answers after the CD finishes.
Students- Listen to the CD and draw lines from the kids’ names to the things the like.

More Vocabulary- 6 minutes
Text- page 25.
Blackboard- (Write after the students say the words- 6 total) pineapple; bird; milk; banana; fish; juice; dog; cat; swimming; apple; strawberry; soccer; baseball; rabbit; skiing; ice cream (16 total).
ALT/HRT- Ask the students if they know the English names of the pictures on page 25.  Say the words in Japanese to help the students is needed. Write the words on the blackboard in English after the students say the words.
Students- Say the names of the pictures in English.

Let’s Chant- I Like Apples Chant- 5 minutes
Blackboard-
  • I like apples. clap-clap X3  I like apples, too! clap-clap-clap
  • I like apples. clap-clap X3  I don’t like apples. clap-clap-clap
ALT- Listen & Repeat the words from the blackboard with the students once or twice before singing together.
Students- Listen to & Repeat after the ALT, then sing along with the teachers.

O/X Game- 10 minutes
Blackboard-  I like apples. I like apples, too. I don’t like apples.
Materials- Australia Points Map for each student.
ALT & HRT- Take turns making 'I like OO.' statements about students.
Students-
  1. Choose a student using 2 dice.
  2. Repeat after teachers (use the 3 patterns on the blackboard); 
  3. Students raise hands to vote if they think the chosen student’s asnwer is O or Yes, or don’t raise hands if they think the chosen student’s answer is X or No.
  4. Repeat question AGAIN after teacher.
  5. Chosen student asnwers.
  6. Students mark 2 points on Points Map if they guessed correctly. Chosen student also marks 2 points.
Find 3 People- 5 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W) I like OO. 
  • L1) I like OO, too! 
  • L2) I don’t like OO.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate and explain activity: With all students standing, students make pairs. Janken winner says an original sentence- the goal is to make a sentence that will get a ‘I like OO, too’ answer. After getting 3 ‘I like OO, too!’ answers from 3 different students, a student wins and can sit down.
Students- Watch & listen to teachers demonstrate and explain the activity. Then, with all students standing, pair with a partner and play Janken. Winner says a sentence, Loser responds. Students getting 3 ‘I like OO, too!’ answers from 3 different students sit down.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
